Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov has admitted that a return to Russia is not out of the question having failed to hold down a regular first team spot with the Blues last season.

The winger signed for Chelsea in 2009 for £18 million from CSKA Moscow but has made only 22 appearances for the club this season and is keen to play football.

The Russian international admits that a move to his homeland could happen.

“Well, such a possibility shouldn’t be excluded," he told Sports.ru.

“I have no particular proposals. And in general, there’s no point in talking about that yet.”

The 27-year-old stated that he did not want to leave Chelsea but feels he may have to move away as he chases first team football.

He added: “I am a player of Chelsea FC and I speak about my possible return to Russia only because of my strong desire to be on the field. Unfortunately, I did not have enough playing practice at Chelsea.

“I just want to play football, not sit on the bench, that’s why the thoughts about a return occur to me. Now I can’t add anything to this. We’ll see how where it all comes in the end."

Kamui Kobayashi - 5th: "I am very happy. I was struggling a lot in qualifying, but the team did a great job with the pit stop strategy today. The call for the tyre change came at a perfect time. It was no problem to go for such a long stint with the super soft tyres, and I think they would have lasted even longer. After the start I had problems with traffic, but then one after the other they stopped and it became better for me. After my one and only pit stop I was stuck behind Adrian Sutil, and at the same time I had to defend against Mark Webber. In this situation it was a bit difficult to manage the tyres. Without the restart I obviously could have finished fourth. But when Mark was so close behind me on the final laps there was nothing I could do to defend that place. However, I think fifth is a great achievement at the end of what was a difficult weekend."

Peter Sauber, Team Principal: "Once more Kamui drove a fantastic race, managing the tyres very well, and the car was strong too. This is a result he has deserved for a long time. My compliments to Kamui, and also a big thank you to the whole team who prepared the car perfectly. I now hope we can start in Montreal with our regular driver pairing."

James Key, Technical Director: "As always in Monaco, a very eventful race for all concerned. We entered just one car for Kamui with Sergio not racing. Our hopes really relied on Kamui. We opted to go for a one stop strategy, starting on the new soft tyres, and we had a new set of super soft for the second stint. Fundamentally Kamui drove a good race. It's great to bring points home in what has been a very mixed weekend, both in terms of performance and emotion with Checo's crash. We can dedicate these points to him as a team and hope that we can get back to normal in Montreal."

Tactics:Roma’s 4-2-3-1 Striker-less system

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Montella-+-Totti-300x184.jpgEver since Vincenzo Montella has taken charge back in early February he has changed the formation from the diamond on back to the old 4-2-3-1 which was so successful under Luciano Spalletti. With this formation it means that there was no leading striker in the system which meant that there was no place in the starting XI for on loan striker Marco Borriello. Francesco Totti was normally given the starting role up front in a deep lying striker role; I will go into more depth into that later.
Defence
After Philippe Mexes injury back in March, Nicolas Burdisso has come into the role to replace the injured Mexes and has done a stellar job. His other centre back Juan has had a very indifferent season. Burdisso has taken over the role as the ball passer out of the defence a job that Mexes is best at. Burdisso and Juan are excellent readers of the game and are especially good at breaking up attacks. The full back are Marco Cassetti and John Arne Riise who have had okay season, both of their jobs are to help out in attack to overlap both of the wingers. Defensively the job is to help out the two centre backs and help out in the centre if the centre halves are dragged out wide. As in Italy only a few teams play without wingers the attack are more down the centre and the wide areas are not normally used. So the attacking midfielder tends to drift out wide and that’s where your full backs need to defend from.
Midfield
In Roma system, Montella uses two holding midfielders who are Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro. Both have different roles on the pitch and both do it so well. Daniele De Rossi role is the ball winning midfielder and what he does is to break up play in the midfield and look to distribute it to the attack straight away. It’s a disciplined role for De Rossi and quite often you are going to pick up yellow cards and recently his form has dipped and his passing style has failed him. The other player in the midfield is David Pizarro and the role he plays is the deep lying playmaker and this is the man that makes Roma tick, without him the side Roma struggled under Ranieri. But when Montella took charge, Pizarro was drafted pack straight into the squad and hasn’t looked back. Pizarro calmness on the ball is brilliant and plays at his tempo. He is a wonderful passer of the ball and he is the ball carrier of the team, without him Roma struggle.
Attack
On the right hand side of the attack Jeremy Menez plays as a winger and is job is to attack the full back and create chances for the others in the team. Menez is an elegant player who can frustrate you but on his day he is a fantastic player to watch. Simone Perrotta plays just behind the striker and he is the linkup between him and Totti and he likes to run from deep and joins in the attack and contributes some crucial goals. On the left hand side is Mirko Vucinic who plays as an inside forward and is very direct in his play. Vucinic sticks on the left hand side and loves to run down the left and cuts in from the left and links up well with Totti.
Striker
Francesco Totti plays as the central striker or the false number 9. He plays as the deep lying striker on where he comes to get the ball deep and start up attacks with the three who play behind him. Totti struggled when playing with two up front with Marco Borriello earlier this season as one on more than one occasion their wires crossed. But since starting as the lone striker he has found his scoring boots and overtook Roberto Baggio record in Serie A.

Opinion: Are Barcelona the best side ever?

After Saturday’s master-class, can the current Barcelona side now be considered the greatest team of all time?

Edwin van der Sar was overwhelmed with frustration and anger last night. It was his last game for Manchester United, and the grand exit he had hoped for was instead turned into a sorry whimper. His poor positioning for Barcelona’s second goal was the turning point in a match which, at that point, could have gone either way. But it was his post-match comments that were the real crime.

When asked by roving ITV reporter, Gabriel Clarke, if the current Barcelona side are the greatest in the history of the game, the lanky Dutchman responded: “yes.” Extraordinarily good, often sublime, always fascinating to watch; all are assessments of Barcelona to which no one could argue. But the greatest in history?

These sentiments were backed up earlier on this season by Barcelona’s beau, Cesc Fabregas. Having beaten the Catalans 2-1 at the Emirates back in March, you could probably forgive the young Spaniard of most things; but that, surely, does not include tampering with football history. For that was his evildoing when he pronounced that his side’s late win had been achieved against the greatest side ever to play the game.

The trouble with all this eulogising is twofold: firstly, true greatness cannot properly be assessed until it has run its course. And secondly, it just simply cannot be true. At least not yet in the current Barca story.

The ‘greatest team’ have now played two Champions League finals in three years, winning them both. But the ‘greatest team’ have also played at the Emirates twice over a period of 11 months, with the aggregate score: Arsenal 4-3 Barcelona. Of course, the away-leg at Camp Nou last year was a wonderful individual display which left Arsenal shaking their heads in awe. But it is also true that twice now, Pep Guardiola has been to north London, and both times left deeply frustrated against a team that has become a Premier League laughing stock.

Arsenal may claim to have beaten Barca “at their own game”, but many seem to forget last year’s Champions League semi-final first-leg, in which Inter Milan utterly dominated, eventually winning 3-1. Three first half goals from Maicon, Sneijder and Milito paved the way for the now infamous second-leg. That defensive stroke of genius from Mourinho meant Barca – who had over 75% possession – were completely shut out at home. And lest we forget, Inter played over an hour with ten men in that game, thanks to Sergio Busquets’s theatrics.

That semi-final loss meant that Barca could not defend the Champions League trophy they had won a year earlier. A trophy that only came about because of one of the worst refereeing performances in living memory. Tom Henning Ovrebo is no longer an UEFA-standard referee because of it: no one can be surprised.

Lack of patience and defensive frailties were not flaws that you could pin-point at Arrigo Sacchi’s ’89 Milan side. Boasting a team outrageously full of talent, this rossoneri side won the European Cup twice in a row in ’89 and ’90, and also reached three of the next four European Cup finals. When you have Marco van Basten, Ruud Guillit and Frank Rijkaard in attack, it’s easy to understand how they did it. But perhaps even more remarkable were their league performances during the same time. In the 1988-89 season, Milan lost only one game all season, letting in a total of 12 goals. And two seasons later, they would go on a frankly remarkable 58 game winning streak – remember that Serie A at the time was by far and away the best league in the world.

Other great European sides that also need to be considered are: the Bayern Munich side of the mid-70′s who won the Big-eared Trophy for three consecutive years in ’74, ’75, ’76. That side included the great Franz Beckenbauer, bombarding wing-back Paul Breitner and goalscoring behemoth Gerd Muller, who in one European Cup year scored nine goals in six games, and also scored in all three finals. Ajax Amsterdam of the three previous years also have to be in contention for the title of ‘greatest team of all time.’ Like Bayern, they also won three consecutive European Cups, this time in ’71, ’72, ’73. Pioneers of the pass-and-move style Barcelona currently deploy, this Dutch side created the template for ‘Total Football’, something which mesmerised the footballing world for three perfect years. And with Johann Cruyff as its focal point, they had the perfect player, for the perfect team at the perfect time.

If we are to talk about European glory as a parameter for greatness then we can’t go any further without mentioning the Real Madrid side of the late-50′s. Five European Cups in a row is still, to this day, unfathomable. Wins over Stade Reims (twice), Fiorentina, AC Milan and most famously Eintracht Frankfurt helped Real Madrid monopolise the trophy for the first five years of its existence. If every great team had one great player, it doesn’t come much better than Alfredo di Stefano. The lynchpin of that Los Blancos side, he scored in all five finals he played and is one of only two players to score a hat-trick in a European Cup final. (The other being Ferenc Puskas, who incidentally scored his in the same game: the 7-3 win over Frankfurt.)

Puskas, as good as he was at Real Madrid, was even better for his national side Hungary. Admittedly, international football is a lot different to club football, but we can’t go through the greatest club sides in history without mentioning some the best international teams as well. And that Hungary side, of which Puskas was the key component was some side. According to the ELO all-time football ranking system they are the greatest international team ever. Unbeaten for more than four years between 1950-1954, they were only denied their name in the annuls of history by a World Cup final defeat in 1954; a 3-2 loss to a West Germany team now believed to have been fuelled by illegal substances. Of course, on these shores, they will be remembered for their 6-3 victory over England, the first time a ‘foreign’ side had beaten the English on the hallowed Wembley turf. ‘The Match of the Century’ was then followed by a 7-1 thumping in Budapest six months later, just to prove it was no fluke. It would be no exaggeration to say that The Mighty Magyars quite literally invented the modern game. Technicolour football in a black-and-white world.

Three years ago, World Soccer Magazine asked the same question as I am now. They polled a number of football men far more qualified than myself, and the concluding result was a landslide. The best side ever were the Brazil team of 1970. Pele, Jarzinho, Revelino and Carlos Alberto were the samba stars who showed the world how to play. That Mexico ’70 was the first World Cup to be televised worldwide and in colour may have helped. But the fact remains that their 4-1 win over Italy in the final is the best final performance ever, and includes the greatest World Cup goal ever.

Of course, two European cups and three consecutive La Liga titles is an astonishing achievement. But are Barcelona 2009-onwards really the greatest football team ever? Not just yet anyway.

Rio Ferdinand praises Champions League winners after Manchester United are defeated at Wembley

http://u.goal.com/132800/132874_news.jpgManchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was gallant in defeat after the Sir Alex Ferguson's side were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley.

A first half strike from Pedro gave the Catalans the lead but Wayne Rooney’s strike put United level at half time.

But there was nothing Ferdinand and his teammates could do as Barca moved up through the gears in the second half and added two goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa to seal their fourth Champions League title.

“Give credit to them, they played well,” Ferdinand told ITV Sport after the final whistle.

“We could’ve played better in parts, but on the day they were the better team so we can’t really argue.”

Barcelona dominated possession throughout the match and created many more chances than United, restricting their opponents to a handful of chances on the counter attack.

And Ferdinand admitted Pep Guardiola’s side could be the best side ever due to the chemistry and talent they have within their squad.

“I think time will tell [if they’re the best ever],” he continued.

“They’re a great side, with great players.

“They’ve got a way of playing they all know well and it was up to us to combat them and today we didn’t do that.”

United will be disappointed with the goals they conceded, especially Villa’s strike which came from United's defence giving the ball away inside their own penalty area.

Ferdinand did his best to block the Spaniard's strike but the ball was curled around him and into the back of the net and past Edwin Van der Sar, and the defender admitted they could have defended better.

“We’ll have to look at them [the goals] when we get inside but yeah we could have done better,” he added.

“With a couple of the goals but you need a bit of lady luck with you,

“You need to defend well and tonight maybe a couple of times we got caught.”

The defeat is the second in three years for United against the La Liga giants, which is not a feeling the England defender likes to experience given the belief they had going into the game that they could contain the free flowing football of their opponents.

“Losing any cup final is the same, it doesn’t matter where it is,” he explained.

“You don’t want to come to any final and lose and we came here to win and we genuinely believed that but tonight give credit where credit’s due, they were the better team.”

First-team squad members Moustapha Salifou and Isaiah Osbourne have also been allowed to leave Villa Park along with youngsters Durrell Berry, Ellis Deeney, Calum Flanagan, Harry Forrester and Arsenio Halfhuid.

Reo-Coker moved to Villa Park from West Ham for ?£8.5million four years ago and captained the side several times during his stay. He featured in 30 Barclays Premier League games last season but has now been deemed surplus to requirements.

Carew, 31, joined the club with a genuine European pedigree and finished as Villa's leading goalscorer in three successive seasons before falling down the pecking order.

Veteran French midfielder Robert Pires had plenty of Premier League experience with Arsenal and after training with his former club to regain match fitness he was offered a short-term deal by Villa boss and fellow Frenchman Gerard Houllier in November.

Nani promises to deliver Barca blow

Nani has promised Sir Alex Ferguson he will deliver if he is handed a starting spot at Wembley on Saturday.

With Antonio Valencia impressing since his return from a broken ankle and Nani's performances dipping slightly, it has seemed increasingly likely the 24-year-old will miss out on a place in Ferguson's team when they square up to Barcelona in the Champions League final.

But the Portugal winger said: "I have played against Argentina and Spain and always done well. Barcelona's football is the same and the players are the same. I like to play against teams who play that way. It is good for me. I feel happy because I know when I play against those players, it will go right."

Yet Nani also views Barcelona's star names as the men who set a standard he needs to match.

For so long overshadowed at United by the vast contribution of Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani has blossomed since the former world player of the year's departure to Real Madrid two years ago.

He is adamant further development is possible though, and watching Lionel Messi at home on TV only fuels his desire to get better.

"When I am at home and watching TV I think about Barcelona's players in a totally different way than if I am playing against them," he said.

"At home, I appreciate the way they play. Messi is the best player in the world. I like to see him play and see the things he does. He inspires other players to do different things as well.

"But on the pitch I want to be better than them. Every day I am on the training ground I always practice. I want to improve the things I am not good at. I am trying to be mentally stronger.

"I am not perfect but feel with more experience I can contribute more to the team."

Chicharito: I do not aspire to be like Lionel Messi & just want to sweat my Manchester United shirt to death

The Mexican striker has laughed off comparisons with the Argentine star, and says that he will never stop running for his team-mates and he is not preoccupied with scoring goals

Javier Hernandez has told journalists that he will "sweat his shirt to death" ahead of the Champions League final against Barcelona.

http://u.goal.com/132100/132143_news.jpgThe Mexican international has scored 20 goals this season for the Old Trafford outfit and has been praised by both Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola ahead of the fixture.

However, when asked whether he hoped to match the feats of the Argentinian attacker, the Manchester United forward replied modestly.

He said: "No. I am a player of this great team. I don't aspire to be like Messi. I'm just a simple footballer."

When questioned about whether his impressive goal tally was down to a fixation on scoring, the striker, Chicharito credited his team-mates for his success.

"What obsesses me is sweating this shirt to death, and I will never stop running," he continued.

"I'm not obsessed with goals. The goals are the result of the work of the whole team. The forwards only have the good fortune to score them. In a team like ours, even Edwin [van der Sar] can claim the goals."

Ahead of Saturday's match, which Manchester United approach as clear underdogs, Hernandez was keen to point out the unpredictability of football and banish any memories the squad might have of their defeat in the 2009 final to the same opposition.

"We have to forget that," he added.

"Barcelona is an extraordinary team that plays beautiful and eye-catching football. But we are not in the final for nothing.

"Football is the least predictable sport in the universe. There may be a very open game or a very close one."

Liverpool and Arsenal in transfer tussle for £10m Barcelona star

Liverpool and Arsenal are set to battle it out for the signature of Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay.

http://resources.sportingo.com/gallery/14454_275x189.jpgWatching the Champions League final on Saturday? Check in on fanatix.com.

Both Premiership sides are looking to reinforce their flanks this summer, with Barcelona willing to listen to offers of £10m for the 25-year-old Dutch international, according to sources close to the club.

Afellay joined the Catalan Giants from PSV in January, but has failed to become a permanent fixture in the side, making 16 appearances including just seven starting lineups.

However the Dutchman has impressed when called upon, with Arsenal and Liverpool ready to match Barcelona’s valuation of the player.

The Anfield club were linked with Afellay prior to his move to the Nou Camp with Reds chief Damien Comolli a big fan of the wide-man.

Liverpool are looking to recruit two new wingers for next season, and have been heavily linked with Aston Villa’s Ashley Young, Wolves’ Matt Jarvis and Sevilla’s Jesus Navas.

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also said to be an admirer of Afellay, who can play as a centre attacking midfielder or on either wing.

With the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Andrey Arshavin all linked with a move away from The Emirates, the Gunners could be ready to bid for the versatile performer.

Australia Eyes 2022 World Cup Re-vote; FIFA Awaits English FA Corruption Evidence

http://www.worldfootballinsider.com/_img/articles/mc5tdvg5.3kw.jpg(WFI) INSIDER understands that Australia's sports minister Mark Arbib is closely watching developments at FIFA following calls in some quarters for a re-vote for the 2022 World Cup if bribery allegations against Qatar are proven.

Earlier this week, Qatar 2022 World Cup organisers dismissed allegations they paid $1.5 million to two FIFA Executive Committee members - CAF president Issa Hayatou and Ivory Coast's Jacques Anouma - in exchange for their votes. Both men also denied receiving bribes.

A whistleblower claimed the bribes were paid to the pair, allegations which surfaced in a submission from a Sunday Times investigation that went before a British parliamentary inquiry two weeks ago. But the whistleblower, who INSIDER reported last week to be a former media officer with the Qatar bid, did not show up to be interviewed by FIFA in Zurich this week "based on the advice of his/her lawyer", FIFA said.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who is running for a fourth and final term in elections next Wednesday, said last week he would wait for evidence to arrive at FIFA headquarters in Zurich before determining whether the governing body's ethics committee would open an investigation into the allegations against Hayatou and Anouma.

FIFA has already received corruption evidence from the Sunday Times but a spokesman for world football's governing body told INSIDER on Thursday that there was no indication yet of whether an ethics probe would be launched.

In any investigation, if the allegations of bribery against Hayatou and Anouma are proven, Blatter has raised the prospect of a re-vote on the 2022 World Cup host.

Australia, which blew $45 million of taxpayers money on the bid which garnered just one vote, could yet win hosting rights under this scenario. The USA, Japan and South Korea were the other candidates in the 2022 race.

Arbib, who is also on the executive committee of World Anti-Doping Agency, and has a reputation for being a smart, leading political operative in the governing Labor Party, told the Australian Senate recently that he agreed with the view of British Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, that "... Swiss authorities should consider legal action against FIFA or its executive members if any allegations are proven".

"Like all football fans, I am disappointed about the allegations that have been made," he said.

He also said that if anyone has evidence against FIFA executive members or the 2018/2022 bidding process "they should take it to FIFA". "It is the place for the evidence to be heard."

With allegations around FIFA corruption or impropriety appearing almost daily in the past week, INSIDER is told that Arbib is maintaining a "watching brief" and would not hesitate to contact his counterparts in other countries if needed.

Arbib also told the Senate that "there has been discussion about reform".

While Australia may be dismissed by some in the corridors of FIFA as a minnow football nation, its women's team is ranked 11th in the world and are the current Asian champions, it's men's team is ranked 20th, around 1 million Australians play the game and they are the hosts of the 2015 Asian Cup.

From Arbib's perspective, that's reason enough to take a close interest in developments.

Three FIFA ethics investigations before presidential vote
The FIFA ethics committee could potentially be busy with three separate corruption investigations this weekend before the FIFA Executive Committee meets on Monday and ahead of Wednesday's presidential vote at the Zurich congress.

FIFA yesterday opened a separate ethics investigation into bribery claims made by CONCACAF secretary general Chuck Blazer against FIFA vice president Jack Warner and Mohamed bin Hammam, who is standing against Blatter in the June 1 presidential election.

Both men are scheduled to attend an ethics hearing on Sunday.

FIFA announced today that a press conference would be held around 6pm CET on May 29. FIFA secretary general Jérôme Valcke and deputy chairman of the FIFA Ethics Committee Petrus Damaseb will give their verdicts following the investigation and hand out any sanctions decided.

A third FIFA ethics investigation may be launched on Friday when football's governing body receives a report from the English FA inquiry into accusations made by former England 2018 World Cup chairman David Triesman that four FIFA Ex-Co members - Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Worawi Makudi and Ricardo Teixeira - demanded "improper" inducements in return for their votes during the bidding campaign.

"We are yet to receive the report of The FA on those allegations made at the House of Commons, so cannot speculate on whether or not that will go to the ethics committee," a FIFA spokesman told INSIDER.

An English FA spokesman told INSIDER: "Logistically we are set up to get it to them tomorrow."

Gay Athletes Might Be Turning Corner, Experts Say

It would seem there's never been a better time to be gay in the sports world.

Two Phoenix Suns basketball players have participated in a public service announcement this year denouncing the phrase "that's so gay."

National Football League linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo -- and National Hockey League forward Sean Avery -- backed same-sex marriage in videos, and several people came out: a former Villanova University basketball player, two sports journalists and Phoenix Suns president and CEO Rick Welts.

Indeed, 2011 might turn out to be a watershed year for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in athletics, some sports experts and leaders of gay organizations say. Even so, not one active gay male in any of the four major U.S. leagues has publicly come out.

Some say that could change after the San Francisco Giants -- the World Series champions -- complete their video spot for the "It Gets Better" campaign, a movement compiling more than 10,000 videos of those who overcame bullying and social isolation because they were gay, lesbian or transgender.

Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter told ABCNews.com the team planned to finish the video in the next few weeks. The Giants have yet to announce who will be in it but Slaughter said, "We do have players participating."

In the meantime, former NBA star Charles Barkley's decision to speak out about LGBT acceptance has already created shockwaves.

Barkley Interview Makes National Headlines

Barkley announced on a Washington, D.C., radio show this month that he'd played with gay teammates, and claimed major sports teams are often unfairly portrayed as hotbeds of homophobia.

"I really like ESPN," Barkley told reporter Mike Wise. "They do a great job. But like once every two or three months, they bring all these people on there, and they tell me how me and my team are going to respond to a gay guy."

Barkley, who is already well known for his sometimes controversial, provocative presence on TNT's "Inside the NBA," is considered one of the 50 best NBA players in history. So when the former power forward says: "I'd rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can't play," people pay attention.

For ESPN Radio host Jared Max, Barkley's comments became a "tipping point."

The interview spurred Max to come out last week on the air, something he equates with jumping out of a plane (which he said he has always wanted to do).

"There's that moment beforehand ... that moment of, 'I can't do this' and the moment where you say, 'Just shut up and go; do it."

Afterward, people began sending him congratulations on Facebook. And he was surprised and relieved to receive a supportive email from a former colleague and close friend whose reaction he had feared.

"We had a bro-relationship," Max said. "Two dudes."

The support came from within his company as well. While driving home from a business meeting, he got a call from ESPN president George Bodenheimer, who complimented him on the broadcast.

"To get that phone call was humbling, it was like, wow, this is just unbelievable," Max said.

OutSports.com co-founder Cyd Zeigler said he believes this year marks a turning point for the LGBT community because support for gay equality within athletics is happening so publicly.

"It's a direct result of what happened in this country from 2008 to 2010, where we saw voters withdraw the civil rights of gay people and we saw so many young gay kids killing themselves," he said. "Those two things woke people up."

Andrew Hignell: Symonds feat recalled by Napier’s hitting

Graham Napier came within one blow of breaking one of cricket’s all-time batting records as he struck a remarkable 16 sixes in Essex’s first innings in their Championship match against Surrey at Whitgift School on May 19.

Remarkably, the Essex man was playing his first Championship innings for eleven months after successfully recovering from a spinal stress fracture and he showed his well-being by making a career-best 196.

This was also the second time that Napier had struck 16 sixes in an innings, having achieved the feat in a remarkable 152 not out from just 58 balls in a Twenty20 Cup contest against Sussex at Chelmsford.

Napier’s six-hitting tally at Whitgift School equalled the first-class record held by Andrew Symonds who in August 1995 struck 16 sixes in Gloucestershire’s first innings against Glamorgan at the delightful Avenue Road ground in Abergavenny – widely regarded to have been one of the most picturesque grounds on the county circuit with Glamorgan taking first-class cricket to the Monmouthshire market town during the 1980s and 1990s.

Nestling among tree-topped hills on the Welsh border, a mile or so from the town centre, the tranquil setting for Symonds’ feats could not have been more different than the surroundings at the Croydon ground where Napier struck his 16 sixes amid the bricks and mortar, plus the bustling traffic, of suburban south London.

Abergavenny’s quaint pavilion and irregular boundary also provided a timely reminder of cricket’s rural roots in the pre-commercial era, and it was in this idyllic setting that Andrew Symonds, then an Anglo-Australian, hit the headlines with his batting feats during his season with the West Country side while he decided whether to qualify for either England or Australia.

The four-day game began with Glamorgan posting 334 with three batsmen scoring half-centuries, but it then exploded into life on the second day as Symonds blasted an unbeaten 197 with a dozen sixes as Gloucestershire reached 373 for 7 by the close.

Half a dozen of his sixes came against spinner Neil Kendrick, who sixteen years later was present at Croydon to witness Napier’s salvo as the former Glamorgan and Surrey cricketer is now teaching and coaching at Whitgift School.

Returning to events of 1995, Symonds’s sixes continued the following morning and just before noon he despatched the usually economical Steve Watkin high back over his head and over the boundary at the Pen-y-pound End for his record-breaking 16th six – beating the previous record held by New Zealander John Reid, who struck 15 in his innings for Wellington against Northern Districts in 1962-63.

The ball struck by Symonds eventually came to rest on a tennis court some 20 feet beyond the tree-lined boundary, but it proved to be the final six of his innings as Gloucestershire were shortly afterwards dismissed for 461 leaving Symonds undefeated on 254 having also struck 22 fours in his dramatic 206-ball innings.

But this was not the end of Symonds’s six-hitting in the contest as during the second innings he struck four more to take his match tally to 20, breaking the previous first-class record of 17 struck by Warwickshire’s Jim Stewart against Lancashire in 1959.

The contest at Abergavenny ended in a draw, but almost unnoticed Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath completed a superb match return of 13 for 150, with his supreme efforts with the ball – on a ground widely regarded as a bowler’s graveyard – in keeping with the almost surreal atmosphere generated by one of county cricket’s most idiosyncratic, and charming, of venues.

Similarly, the game at Whitgift School this summer also produced an oddity; a match aggregate of 1443 runs yet in the Surrey first innings Mark Ramprakash – one of the most prolific batsmen in recent times on the county circuit – completed a twelve-ball duck.

Bundesliga target opens transfer door to 'top club' Liverpool

http://www.givemefootball.com/GMF/files/48/48afaafc-344a-48c9-9e7a-2b3cbbfae58c.jpgLiverpool winger target Eljero Elia has opened the door to a potential summer move from Hamburg.

The Dutch international has revealed interest from several clubs across Europe, with fellow German side Wolfsburg tabling a €20 million offer for the player back in January.

After a falling out with management at the club, Elia was expected to make a move in the opening month of the year, but held firm to keep the 24-year-old at the Imtech Arena.

Kenny Dalglish was one of those to show an interest in the player, following the lead of former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson in monitoring the player's progress.

The former FC Twente star has now stoked the fire, talking up a potential move to Anfield and claiming Liverpool are still the 'top club' in England.

"There was enough interest. Liverpool, Everton and Juventus wanted me in the winter, loaning me out initially with an option to buy. Wolfsburg immediately offered €20 million and a top salary," said Elia in reference to the January interest.

"Liverpool remains England's top team and Juventus are still the biggest club in Italy. Bigger than AC Milan, Inter and the rest, but Hamburg did not want to let me go."

The comments come as Liverpool search for a winger signing, with Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Eden Hazard placed on the Merseysiders' radar.

Damien Comolli, director of football for the Reds, has been working alongside Dalglish to highlight transfer targets and Elia is another name in the frame for a possible switch.

England need to hit the ground running - Strauss

http://www.sport.co.uk/public/images_news/2011/5/25/rs_20101229112308.jpgEngland skipper Andrew Strauss has called on his team mates to make a winning start against Sri Lanka in the first Test.
The English players return to Test action for the first time since they got the better of Australia in the Ashes in the winter, kicking off the summer against Sri Lanka before the number one Test side in the world, India, come over.
Sri Lanka come to England having lost two of their star bowlers in Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga, while promising youngster Nuwan Pradeep is also out of the three-match Test series.
Despite being a team in transition Strauss was keen to remind over-confident supporters Sri Lanka still possess some dangerous players in Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
With a potentially testing summer to come, Strauss wants England to get off to a winning start in the first Test, which begins on Thursday at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.
"It's a big challenge, it's an exciting Test summer ahead of us and there is a real determination to reconnect to what happened in the Ashes, but also to move on from that," said Strauss.
"We will be tested by two really good sides and we need to respond really well to that. I would be disappointed if we ease into this summer, we need to hit the ground running."

MOTORSPORT: Bright brilliant in team's popular V8 win

Considering the emotional rollercoaster his V8 Supercar team has been riding, it's not surprising Team BOC's Jason Bright can go so quickly on a flat track.

A team which has been dealing with driver Jason Richards' cancer battle, then the fiery crash involving Karl Reindler in Perth, secured a popular race win at Winton on Sunday courtesy of Bright.

Rocketing past championship leader Jamie Whincup with three laps remaining, Bright posted his second win of the year and moved to fourth in the championship.

Luka Modric targeted by Chelsea, Man City and Man United

Luka Modric is set to be the subject of transfer bids from Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United this summer, after Spurs missed out on the Champions League.

The Croatian has been one of the stars of the Premier League season, with some commentators feeling he was unlucky not to be named player of the year.

That form has seen him move to the head of the target lists for English football's top three, who hope to take advantage of the financial blow Tottenham have suffered by failing to clinch a place in European football's elite competition.

The midfielder is Mourinho’s second signing of the summer after fellow Turkish international Nuri Sahin arrived from Borussia Dortmund.

The 40-year-old said he witnessed his former team mate Armstrong inject himself with a blood-booster during the 1999 Tour de France, which Armstrong won.

Carlos Tevez says he could stay at Manchester City if he can find a solution to his family issues, reports the BBC.
The Argentine striker has been linked with a move to Italy but after helping the club lift the FA Cup on Saturday, Tevez said he was not set on leaving.
"My family are my priority, I don't have a problem with anyone at the club. Everyone treats me right.
"But there is an issue we need to sort out and that's the long distance between me and my family," said Tevez.
"I have a great relationship with [manager] Roberto Mancini. We are both winners.
"There are still two games to play and we are only focused on that. Then I will talk with my family and everyone else. I have not made a decision on anything yet.

Rocky Elsom in long-awaited comeback

Wallabies skipper Rocky Elsom will play his first match in six months for the Brumbies on Saturday as coach Tony Rea waits to see how his team responds to his stinging criticism.

Rea named Elsom to start the Super Rugby match against the Western Force in Perth at blindside flanker as he makes his long-awaited return from a lingering hamstring injury.

And while the struggling Brumbies have trained strongly during the week since Rea publicly questioned their fortitude, the coach says the real proof will be in their efforts against the Force.

Arsenal Go Head-to-Head with Manchester City for Ajax Star

http://www.sportsvibe.co.uk/assets/Uploads/_resampled/SetWidth250-Picture-638.pngThe 24-year-old has earned rave reviews for his assured performances for the Amsterdam club and recently celebrated winning the his first league title.

The talented central defender has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks with Italian giants AC Milan said to be chasing his signature while Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is also an admirer.

The Italian was present at the KNVB Cup Final and was said to be watching Vertonghen in action as Ajax were beaten 3-2 by FC Twente. Should he decide to choose Eastlands then he would be paired with fellow Begium international Vincent Kompany.

However, Arsenal still remain the favourites to land the defender who enjoyed a successful partnership with Thomas Vermaelen when the pair were together at Ajax.

The Belgium ace has admitted that he would be attracted to the Premier League after hearing positive review from former Ajax striker Luis Suarez who has enjoyed a successful start to his career in England.

"I have something with England — especially with the nostalgic atmosphere around the football," Vertonghen told The Sun. "If I could make the step then I would prefer to play in a footballing team but I won't go to a club where I am given the task to play the long ball.

"My goal for this season was to play a stable season with 25 to 30 games on a constant basis. That's how I saw my development and broadly it has been like that. Now this is the first year I would consider a possible transfer.

"It's utopian to think players can be kept in Holland until they are 27. It is all fantastic stories from the guys who play in a foreign league. I hear them from Luis Suarez but also from six or seven players from the Belgian national team."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his defence after having problems at the back with Vermaelen missing the majority of the campaign while Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have struggle to cope with life in the Premiership.

Barcelona Starlet Discusses Liverpool Move

http://www.sportsvibe.co.uk/assets/Uploads/_resampled/SetWidth250-jeffren-suarez-barcelona-racing.jpgDespite the plethora of attacking options at the disposal of Pep Guardiola, which has limited Jeffren to just three La Liga matches this year, the 23 year-old is determined to stay on with the Spanish champions and prove his worth.

Earlier in the season, both Rangers and Celtic have reportedly expressed an interest in bringing the Venezuela-born forward to the Scottish Premier League on a loan deal.

However, speaking yesterday, Jeffren expressed his desire to remain at the Nou Camp.

"I do not want to go because want to succeed at this club," he explained.

"I hope to have more minutes on the pitch and my biggest wish is to remain at Barca."

Should Jeffren be deemed surplus to requirements by Guardiola, he is sure to have no shortage of potential suitors.

Though his role at Barcelona this season was a periphery one, he did complete the scoring in the famous 5-0 El Clasico victory over Madrid last November, a feat that will certainly rank highly amongst his career highlights.

Appalled Waugh accuses Graham of damaging Australian rugby

Monday, May 16, 2011

http://images.watoday.com.au/2011/05/15/2363943/gal_ben_lucas-600x400.jpgPHIL WAUGH has described as ''appalling'' Western Force coach Richard Graham's admission that his team tried to entice NSW spectators to jeer their own team by reducing their previous game to a kicking contest.

Graham freely admitted that the Force's game plan at the Sydney Football Stadium was to constantly kick the ball away in order for the Waratahs to do the same in front of their frustrated fans - therefore causing the spectators to boo NSW and put extra pressure on the home side.

Waratahs skipper Waugh, who was sidelined with injury for the game, said Graham's approach was detrimental to the sport.
Advertisement: Story continues below

''I think it's probably one of the most appalling attitudes to come into a game with,'' Waugh told the Herald yesterday. ''Having a reliance on the home town's crowd to boo their team, particularly when we're trying to grow the game, is pretty poor. As a provincial coach you have a responsibility to grow the game and coming to Sydney, which is the biggest market, with that attitude is really disappointing.

''He is a coach that has experience with the Wallabies and is very involved in Australian rugby. I think it's really disappointing if I'm a rugby fan in Australia.

''We talk about getting more local derbies and more entertainment, but when you have a coach that puts it out there that their tactic is to deliberately bore the crowd so they will boo, that is not conducive to making the game better here.''

But Graham scoffed at the attack, saying NSW's problems existed long before he revealed his plan.

''What is the common denominator? It's not me,'' Graham said. ''I am not the catalyst for it.

''Phil has obviously got his own comments and opinions, but I am not there every week, it was one week out of 16. One thing about NSW in terms of crowd, they are passionate and they can become hostile [as evidenced earlier this year when spectators jeered NSW off the field after a defeat to the Cheetahs].

''You have to use that, just like you use the conditions and the weather, we're there to win. It's got nothing to do with growing the game.''

Waugh said it was ''extremely pleasing'' to have defeated the Force twice this year, by 20-15 on May 7 in the offending match, and a 31-3 romp in Perth on April 9.

The Waratahs have serious concerns over growing perceptions that they have a negative approach, to the extent they will hold a forum with their supporters on Thursday night to answer criticism.

''It's not us versus them, we want to perform for the people and we want everybody on our side,'' Waugh said. ''Our expectation is very similar to the crowds I'm sure. It's about being as open as possible.

''We're pretty confident in opening the doors and letting people see what goes on and how hard people work. We're all fighting to win the competition in whatever way we can.''

Waugh believes his side must take some of the blame, not because they haven't spread the ball from side to side in their past two games, but rather when they have kicked it has not been well executed.

''I don't think it's necessarily a frustration about the way we play the game but the skill execution of what we do on the field,'' he said. ''It is not necessarily throwing the ball from sideline to sideline. Educated fans know when there is a time to kick and they will appreciate it when it is done well, but when it is not executed well they will get frustrated.

''If you go through how many line breaks we've had this season we're right up there with the best teams. The perception has got to change. And the only way to change the perception is to execute well.''

And Waugh knows the sure-fire way to turn the tide.

''Given the fact we haven't been able to win the title, more times than not there is that frustration there,'' Waugh said.

Nasri and Fabregas to quit Arsenal, Benzema to sign?

http://photos.thefirstpost.co.uk/assets/library/110516fabri--130553131768312200.jpgSamir Nasri is set to quit Arsenal for Bayern Munich, that's the stunning bombshell that the News of the World exploded at the weekend. The 23-year-old Frenchman is allegedly fed up with Arsenal's empty trophy cabinet and has been in discussions with Bayern Munich. The NoW says that the German giants are willing to pay the Gunners £30m for the midfield maestro, who started the season in blistering form only to fade badly with the rest of the Arsenal squad, as Sunday's abject home defeat to Aston Villa illustrated.

Apparently, Bayern see Nasri as the perfect replacement for Franck Ribery, a compatriot of Nasri's who rumoured to be on his way out of the Bundesliga in the summer. "Bayern are thinking big, as their interest in a number of English-based players has shown," a club insider told the NoW.

With Cesc Fabregas also likely to leave the Emirates next month, returning to Barcelona in a big money deal, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will have to reconstruct his midfield with Jack Wilshere the only world-class player definitely staying on although he must be wondering what he's let himself in for in the wake of one shocking result after another in recent weeks.

But while one Frenchman leaves, another one arrives, perhaps, with the Metro reporting that Karim Benzema will be leaving Real Madrid for Arsenal in the summer after the two clubs allegedly agreed a £25m deal. Benzema has been told by Jose Mourinho, coach of Real, that's he's unlikely to feature regularly next season at the Bernabeu, and that's convinced the 23-year-old French striker to respond to Arsenal's come-hither glances. Inter Milan and Juventus have also been making enquiries about the French international but according to Metro Benzema has been persuaded by Wenger to have a crack at the Premier League

Mind you, the deal might not be quite as cut and dried as the Metro assumes because Benzema's agent, Kraim Djaziri, has distanced himself from the story, telling Spanish rag AS: "Karim has at no time thought about leaving Real Madrid this summer and he has not told me to open talks with Arsenal or any other club," Djaziri is quoted as ranting to the paper. "The report published by Metro is completely false. Karim just wants to stay at Madrid and build on his good performances from the past couple of months."

So who should we trust, the Fourth Estate or a football agent? Transfer Talk will let you, our discerning readers, make up your own minds.

One player who has apparently made up his mind is Schalke 04 keeper Manuel Neuer. The German international said weeks ago that he would leave the club at the end of the current season but it was unclear where he was headed. Manchester United and Arsenal were both mooted as possibilities but Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness told German television at the weekend that the 24-year-old Neuer is coming their way next season. "Our management have been able to outline an agreement with Schalke. The question is now whether they will want to formalise the deal," Hoeness told Sky Deutschland. It's believed Bayern will pay Schalke around £17m up front with bonuses to follow depending on how well Neuer performs.

The Sun reports that Spurs might be about to snare Uruguay striker Diego Forlan as Atletico Madrid look to offload the 31-year-old who has scored just 10 goals this season. Harry Redknapp had hoped to bring Forlan to White Hart Lane in January but that never materialised, yet according to the Sun the Spanish club are now prepared to sell the South American for £10m, half of what Redknapp had been expecting to pay for the outstanding frontman of last summer's World Cup.

Finally, flushed from their FA Cup success, Manchester City are now hoping to snap up England defender Leighton Baines in next month's transfer window. The Mirror says that the Sky Blues are desperate to get their hands on the 26-year-old Baines and are putting together a £20m pacakage that they hope will lure him from Everton to Eastlands instead of the Emirates. Arsenal have been courting Baines for weeks but it's unlikely the Gunners would be able to match City's offer.

Bayer Munich chief Hoeness says Neuer deal is done

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has announced that an agreement has been reached for the signing of Manuel Neuer from Schalke.

But he says official confirmation will only come when Schalke are ready.

The Germany international will reportedly join the Bavarians for a fee of 15million euros, with more instalments owing depending on success, but the move can only be ratified when the Gelsenkirchen club see fit.

"Our board have reached an agreement with Schalke in negotiations and it is just a psychological question of whether they want to announce it before the cup final or afterwards," Hoeness told Sky television.

Neuer has already announced that he will not be extending his contract with the Royal Blues beyond 2012 and Bayern's offer has been on the table for some time now.

Representatives from both clubs met in Berlin last week and a deal is believed to have been struck, but Schalke appear to want to end the season before speaking out on their keeper's future.

But Hoeness has beaten them to it by announcing the transfer of the Germany number one, who will seemingly now play his last game for Schalke in the DFB-Pokal final against Duisburg next weekend.

Jupp Heynckes, meanwhile, has no doubt Bayern will reach the Champions League group stage next season after his current employers Bayer Leverkusen pipped the Bavarian giants to the runners-up spot in the Bundesliga.

Heynckes, who takes over as Bayern coach this summer, gave himself a greater workload at the start of next season by guiding Leverkusen to a 1-0 win at Freiburg that clinched second place - and direct passage to the Champions League proper.

With Bayern finishing third, a two-legged qualifier will have to be negotiated if Heynckes new charges are to join Leverkusen at European football's top table.

Bayern could face the likes of Napoli or Roma, or even Manchester City, in the qualifying round, but Heynckes is confident they have the pedigree to overcome any opponent.

"Bayern have a very good team now and they will have an even better one next season," he said. "We will get through the qualifiers."

Bayern president Hoeness is more cautious, however, and has warned of the perils of the qualifying round.

"The small problem is that we could be drawn against Manchester City," he said.

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm added: "It could be very tough, but we are FC Bayern and anybody who gets us will think that they have got the toughest draw."

Stoner roars to second victory of the season at Le Mans

Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner secured victory for the first time in his career at the Le Mans circuit for the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France. It was a close battle until the very end between two Italians for second place but it was the second Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso who clinched the 20 points, ahead of Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) who achieved his first rostrum riding a Ducati.

Stoner roars to second victory of the season at Le Mans
Stoner took his 25th win in his MotoGP career after a dominant ride to pull away at the front and win by a margin of over 14 seconds. With his second win of the season, the Australian has now jumped up to second place in the standings, now 12 points behind Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing).
It was record-breaking attendance for the French GP with 88,400 fans attending the Le Mans circuit for today's MotoGP race, with 176,200 for the full 3 days of action. The rain managed to stay away and an eventful race was enjoyed by the large and enthusiastic crowd. There was action throughout the field but at the end all eyes were on the dice between Dovizioso and Rossi. As in the previous race in Portugal, the Honda rider managed to deny the advances of the nine time World Champion and record his best finish of this year’s campaign. For Rossi, it was his best result of the season and the second Ducati podium of the year.
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) who had made one his trademark rocket starts, led Stoner for the first lap until his team mate came through on the next lap to take control of the race. The Spaniard stayed with the race leader for the first half of the 28 lap race, until he fell into the clutches of Simoncelli. The Italian passed the Repsol Honda rider on lap 17 but then a controversial incident occurred between the two when Pedrosa attempted to reclaim his second position and the two touched which left the Estoril race winner clutching his right shoulder as his race came to an abrupt end.
It was announced that Pedrosa was diagnosed with a broken right collarbone after the race. Race direction declared Simoncelli to have made an illegal manoeuvre and served the rider born in Cattolica with a ride through penalty. The 24 year old eventually finished in fifth position and lost his opportunity of scoring his first ever podium in MotoGP.
Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) making his 150th Grand Prix start and becoming the youngest rider ever to do so, had a bad start to his preparations on Sunday after a crash in warm up which wrecked his bike and left the Spaniard with an injury to his finger. After barging through on Dovizioso early on in the race for a top four place, the 2010 MotoGP World Champion slipped down the order after being re-passed by the Repsol Honda rider and by his fierce rivals, Simoncelli and Rossi to eventually place fourth.
Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) equalled his best result of the 2011 with sixth place which is what he achieved at the opening race at Losail, the American, lost out to Simoncelli after the Italian got the better of him despite his ride through penalty. Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) was seventh, ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) who had a lonely race in eighth.
Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar) won the race long battle to finish in ninth. The Spaniard had been involved in a very exciting tussle with Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) who finished tenth, Toni Elías (LCR Honda), 11th and Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) 12th. After the poor start to his return to MotoGP, Elías was showing signs of his old self and showing his ability which took him to the 2010 Moto2 World Championship and was up to 11th place in a five rider battle in the early part of the race, but had a massive moment and was lucky to keep hold of his Honda but dropped to the back of the group. The 28 year old did manage to pick his way through a number of the riders after a difficult four rounds of the season.
Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) who had qualified an impressive sixth on his first visit to the Le Mans circuit, suffered a lowside when in ninth place on lap five and had to return his machine back to the pits for his first non finish in his rookie campaign. It was not a good day for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 in their home race in France after Colin Edwards also crashed out mid way through the race but managed to get back out to pick up…..points
It was not a happy day for the French fans who had hoped to see Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing) pick up his best result of the season. The French Ducati rider crashed into the gravel on lap two and walked back to the pits dejectedly. Loris Capirossi (Pramac Racing) suffered a similar fate as he crashed out towards the end of the race.

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 5 Players Who Won't Be Back at Anfield Next Season

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Paul Konchesky

 http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/932/770/112241078_display_image.jpg?1305207309

Konchesky was signed up by Roy Hodgson from his former club Fulham and is currently on loan with Nottingham Forest.
Konchesky was impressive with Fulham and earned an England cap but was unable to replicate his form with Liverpool and had a string of dismaying performances which forced him off the starting 11.
Liverpool have struggled to fill in that position and Kenny Dalglish has been linked with a number of left backs, including Newcastle's Jose Enrique.
Perhaps Roy Hodgson would be interested in signing his £3 million left back again.

Sotorios Kyrgiakos

 http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/932/781/107529917_display_image.jpg?1305207309

The hard-tackling defender can be a nuisance at times, and it would in the best interest of Liverpool if Kenny Dalglish can replace him.
There are young defenders on the Liverpool squad ready to take the jump into the first-team squad, so I don't think it would be much of a problem

Christian Poulsen

 http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/932/784/108941850_display_image.jpg?1305205320

Another tough tackling midfielder, Poulsen failed to live up to the standards and was never a fan favorite at Anfield.
A Javier Mascherano replacement, Poulsen did not feature much under Kenny Dalglish and was replaced by the young and impressive Jay Spearing.
He could be one of the players going out of Anfield this season and a U-turn to Juventus could be in the cards.

Milan Jovanovic

 http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/932/787/109025944_display_image.jpg?1305207310

A Rafa Benetiz signing, Jovanovic has been warming the bench under Kenny. A bit-part player, Jovanovic did not live up to his reputation and is certainly on his way out.
Jovanovic initial role on the team was to provide width from the left flank and has failed to deliver. The Serbian, who was brought in on a free transfer, is most likely to end up in the Serie-A unless a club in the Premier League takes a liking to him, which I doubt.

David Ngog

 http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/932/798/110375687_display_image.jpg?1305207312

The signing of Andy Caroll and Luis Suarez all but sealed the deal of Ngog. Although I never saw him as a first-team player, the forward has filled in upfront for injured strikers.
Liverpool would be better off selling him and getting a decent striker to fill in as a backup.
With Pacheco most likely to return next season, I'm not even sure if Liverpool need another striker

"I don't think about winning, I've just come to do well. I am here, I've never done the Giro, the Giro is hard, so we will see in the next days," Kreuziger told Cycling Weekly.

"I'm taking on the responsibilities and I am learning. In the end, others have been leaders for many years and have to show themselves. I am here at school, I am still learning and we will see how it goes."

The 25-year-old Czech's schooling began with top Italian team, Liquigas in 2006. Team management noted him as a junior at the 2004 World Championships and offered him a contract midway through 2005.

As a professional, he won the Tour of Switzerland in 2008 and Tour of Romandy in 2009, and in the last two editions of the Tour de France, finished ninth overall.

He decided to annul his contract a year early, however, since the team had both Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso and Vuelta a España winner Vincenzo Nibali in its ranks. He announced in August that he'd join Astana.

This year, he won the mountaintop stage to Madonna di Campiglio at the Giro del Trentino and finished fourth at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Yesterday, he finished 10th on the Giro's fifth leg to Orvieto and moved up the overall classification. He now sits 52 seconds, 52 away from Pieter Weening (Rabobank) in the leader's pink jersey. Though he's within striking distances, he's going to save himself until the mountainous third week.

"The team is going well. Yesterday, we were ahead with four men. We can be very confident for the stages ahead. The others are here to make the race," he continued.

"I don't think that we will go on the attack. We have a strategy, we had it since the first days and we are following it. Our line is that we follow the rest, but I can't tell you the strategy, otherwise they will all know it."

Kreuziger keeps his cards close to his chest. He's matured, trying to become more of a team leader, but lacks the charisma of his rivals Nibali, Alberto Contador and Michele Scarponi. Perhaps he does carry a little pressure ahead of the race's first mountaintop finishes: Montevirgine on Friday and Mount Etna on Sunday.
