Andy Murray was disappointed with his performance this evening as he exited the Madrid Open with a straight-sets defeat, but nevertheless feels he is progressing in the right direction following his elbow injury.
The world number four bid farewell to the competition at the third-round stage after losing 6-4 6-2 to unseeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in one hour and 30 minutes.
Murray started well enough and fashioned two breaks points on Bellucci’s serve in the third game, and then another in the fifth game.
However, the 23-year-old Scot could not take advantage of any of them, and he paid a heavy cost as Bellucci took the opening set after capitalising on his first break point - which came on set point.
Murray said after the game: “I would’ve liked to have played better today, I’m a bit disappointed with my performance because I started the match not bad but it didn’t get any better, so it was disappointing.”
However, Murray preferred to look at the bigger picture, with today’s match being only his second competitive singles outing since reaching the semi-finals in Monte Carlo.
