José Mourinho has been banned for five games for his behaviour during and after Real Madrid's ill-tempered Champions League semi-final first leg against Barcelona.

Mourinho has already served a one-match ban, during the second leg, and another game is suspended so he will miss Madrid's first three European matches of next season. Mourinho was also fined €50,000 (almost £44,000) by Uefa following his sending-off and incendiary post-match comments, while the Madrid midfielder Pepe was given a one-game ban, already served in the second leg, for his red card.

The Barcelona reserve keeper, José Pinto, who was sent off following a half-time brawl at the Bernabéu, has been given a three-game ban so will not be eligible for the Champions League final against Manchester United on 28 May.

Real Madrid, who became embroiled in a furious war of words with Barcelona that escalated to include allegations of diving and racism, said they would appeal. "Our coach does not have the full right to defend himself since the declarations which merited the opening of the case, and for which he has been sanctioned, are unknown," Madrid said in a statement. The club has also been fined €20,000 over the behaviour of its fans after missiles were thrown on to the pitch.

When it issued the five charges against Mourinho and Madrid, Uefa said that one of them related to Mourinho's "post-match remarks". The Portuguese manager accused Barcelona of wielding untouchable power in European football and said their coach, Pep Guardiola, should feel "ashamed" if he won a competition that "yet again" was engulfed in "scandal".

Mourinho said that Guardiola had yet to win a "clean" Champions League title and felt "disgusted" to be working in football. "It's clear that against Barcelona you have no chance," Mourinho said at the end of the tempestuous match that Madrid ended with 10 men and a 2-0 deficit.

"I don't understand why. I don't know if it's the publicity of Unicef [the club's shirt sponsor], I don't know if it's the friendship of [Spanish football federation president Angel María] Villar at Uefa, where he is vice-president, I don't know if it's because they are very nice, but they have got this power. The rest of us have no chance."

Barcelona said they would also appeal against Pinto's ban.

Uefa's appeals committee had already arranged to sit on 16 May to discuss Madrid's appeal against the decision to throw out their complaint about the behaviour of Barcelona players at the Bernabéu. Madrid accused the midfielder Sergio Busquets of directing a racist slur at their defender Marcelo and asked Uefa to sanction Busquets, Daniel Alves and Pedro Rodríguez for feigning injuries.
