The Dutch international has revealed interest from several clubs across Europe, with fellow German side Wolfsburg tabling a €20 million offer for the player back in January.

After a falling out with management at the club, Elia was expected to make a move in the opening month of the year, but held firm to keep the 24-year-old at the Imtech Arena.

Kenny Dalglish was one of those to show an interest in the player, following the lead of former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson in monitoring the player's progress.

The former FC Twente star has now stoked the fire, talking up a potential move to Anfield and claiming Liverpool are still the 'top club' in England.

"There was enough interest. Liverpool, Everton and Juventus wanted me in the winter, loaning me out initially with an option to buy. Wolfsburg immediately offered €20 million and a top salary," said Elia in reference to the January interest.

"Liverpool remains England's top team and Juventus are still the biggest club in Italy. Bigger than AC Milan, Inter and the rest, but Hamburg did not want to let me go."

The comments come as Liverpool search for a winger signing, with Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Eden Hazard placed on the Merseysiders' radar.

Damien Comolli, director of football for the Reds, has been working alongside Dalglish to highlight transfer targets and Elia is another name in the frame for a possible switch.
